The world's only* jellyfish protection cream invented by students.

Jelly’s Guard is a cream co-developed with students who discovered the mechanism of venomous stingers. Initially, global researchers tried to identify jellyfish toxins, but they remained unsolved.

In developing the jellyfish prevention cream, we studied global research and focused on inhibiting the nematocyst's stinger firing. This led us to Team Nemo, a group of students at Ehime Nagahama High School, conducting cutting-edge research.

Their achievements have been recognized with awards like global science competitions and the Prime Minister’s Award.

*The Aquarium Club of Nagahama High School in Ehime Prefecture has become the first in the world to unravel the mechanism of jellyfish nematocyst discharge.

Origins

Solving the unsolved mystery of jellyfish venom.

Although researchers worldwide have tried to identify jellyfish toxins, the puzzle remained unsolved.

The focus shifted to inhibiting the firing of nematocyst stingers. Leading this cutting-edge research were students from Team Nemo, part of the Nagahama High School Aquarium Club in Ehime.

Their achievements include numerous awards, such as winning international science contests and the Prime Minister’s Award. This collaboration led to the creation of Jelly’s Guard.

EVIDENCE

The secret behind clownfish immunity to sea anemones.

Team Nemo’s research began with a simple question: why don’t clownfish in aquariums get stung by sea anemones?

After eight years of research, they discovered that clownfish protect themselves by coating their bodies with a high concentration of magnesium ions.

Applying this to jellyfish, they realized it was possible to develop a cream that could reduce stings on humans.

Our Goal

This product was developed in collaboration with Team Nemo. As we turned their remarkable ideas into a product, we set three key goals.

Rather than eliminating dangerous marine life, our aim is to coexist with them, reducing risks and encouraging safe marine leisure activities. This fosters awareness of the marine environment and supports coexistence.

Goal 2DREAMFulfilling students’ dreams.

Nagahama High School students achieved their dream of renewing Shikoku’s first aquarium in April 2024. Now open to the public on the third Saturday of each month by reservation, it preserves local history and plays a vital role in community revitalization.

This product started as a high school research project in a classroom, passed down from seniors to juniors. By continuing experiments and refining the work, we aim to nurture innovation, support new discoveries, and foster future talent.
